Peace 2025
“You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life, but by realizing who you are at the deepest level.” Eckhart Tolle
This week’s discussion is around peace and whilst world peace would be ideal, that is something that is totally out of our control and/or influence. The only peace that we can control is our own inner world.
I know at times that the world does not go well, and we all react to what is happening to us. However, we can also change how we view things and change the negative to positive thoughts. As always, to make any change, awareness is the first step.
Many years ago, I sat in on a psychiatrist telehealth appointment with a client. The psychiatrist advised the client to mark down each day – three things that they were grateful for. Whilst this activity did not change the depression, it did give a better quality of life and/or peace to them.
Mindfulness is another way of finding peace and calm. This practice does not alter what is happening both in and around you but does allow you to focus on other thoughts and/or teaches us how to sit with discomfort and uncertainty. Monash University values mindfulness so much, that every allied health and medical students, are required to do a whole semester on this. Twelve weeks to learn how to redirect the brain and learn to focus on one task at a time.
Our mind is so busy, with fifty to sixty thousand thoughts in and every day. Learning how to quieten this or not going down the rabbit hole of each thought, can make a difference.
As always, to present the best version of you to the world – you need to have a great self-care plan. This helps us all bounce back from life’s adverse events at a quicker rate. A gentle reminder that with any adverse event, we all need to adjust to the change, and this may also need some time for the grief and loss that the event also brings.
Another way of living a peaceful life, is living a life that is aligned with your personal value system, or morals. Sitting down and working out which values you truly agree with you and how you would like to present yourself to the world. If your words, actions and thoughts are aligned, you may have a more tranquil life as you live in harmony with your values.
Perhaps this is what Edward Tolle was referring to in this quote.
