Help 2026

“I don’t want to live in the kind of world where we don’t look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I can’t change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.”  Charles De Lint

This week’s conversation is about helping and for me this is part of me, not only professionally but also personally.  There are many of us around in society and at times, our helping nature does get taken advantage of, however we still persevere.

For me, helping involves resources – my time, money, energy and skill set.  All are resources and are limited to what I have and where I would like to place them.  I give my resources to organisations that match with my value systems, such as local not for profits and to those who do great work in the community.  I like to vary who gets my resources along with topics that I believe in.  Whilst as a small business owner, I do not have an unlimited bucket of resources – I do like to donate where and when I can.  Like the quote says, I can do my bit.

This year, I had the opportunity to provide a small amount of money to have an author come to town with his story of resilience and overcoming mental illness.  He will be here this weekend and there are several businesses that are contributing in different ways.  I love a good story and am looking forward to the conversation.  I also assisted in a similar way last year and the book proudly sits on my bookshelf at work.  Looking forward to reading this new book after Saturday’s event.

I also donate my time and sit on a local board for an aged care business.  I took some time out of my day earlier in the week to spend some time discussing our new build and why we need the community to invest and assist with this.  Look out for me on social media as this goes to press soon.  Together, we can all make a difference to where we live and/or what we believe in and what the community needs and deserves.

Lots of people provide resources in any community and this is the fabric of the community.  Schools, service clubs and community groups would not exist for the volunteers that provide their services and expertise.  Every day, people provide the much-needed support to keep our communities flourishing. I like to participate as my family has also benefited from others in the past, especially one in the local arts community.  Help works both ways, reciprocal in giving and receiving.
