Healing and recovery

“Change the person in the mirror, and your world will change.” Rhonda Byrne

This week we are looking at healing and/or recovery and this will be different for each of us as we have not had the same experiences as others.

I believe that the first step to change, healing or recovery is the awareness that something needs to be altered to make the change.  We can’t change anything if we are not aware of the need or want.

We also need to have a safe environment to enable us to make the changes.  If you are living in an unsafe environment, such as family violence – this is not the right time or right space.  I am not saying that nothing can change, this will limit your healing and recovery.  However, any small change may allow you to make other decisions which can begin the journey.

We then require tools to assist us in making small steps to obtaining skills to assist with the change.  Do you need a support person, a self-help book or a professional?  Each person will have a different requirement and there are a range of services out there to assist

Support people can be friends and/or family.  They can encourage you or be a helpful ear and sounding board.  You may need to take care as they may also have a vested interest and may not always be impartial.

Self-help is a low-cost resource, however, if resources are limited – the local library may be an alternative solution to search the web for information and they have books and audio books to borrow.  The local bookshop may also have a selection of items that may be helpful for you on this journey.

Local services often have groups or educational programs if you need assistance with a particular issue.  Educational programs such as “Tuning into teens” or “Tuning into kids” for parents.  Check with your local service provider or council to see what is on offer in your community.

There are also a number of professionals available who may be able to assist you in this change period.  Reach out and see if you can find the right person for you.

Regardless of which way you proceed, all the best on your journey to change, healing and recovery.
