Supports

“You can’t achieve anything entirely by yourself. There’s a support system that is a basic requirement of human existence. To be happy and successful on earth, you just have to have people that you rely on.”

Michael Schur

This week we are discussing your support system, those who help you be the best person you can.  This can be a wealth of people; family, friends, mentors, work colleagues and professionals.

I have and continue to have a range of supports, both in my work and private life – who continue to support me and my ideas.  Not only providing the space to discuss how this will happen, but also physically supporting me to allow the time to complete the activity.  Whether it be for a short period of time or longer.

Back many years ago, I decided to go to university to get a degree.  This would not have been possible without the support of my family as we needed to change a few things on the home front to enable me to do this.  This included my partner but also the kids, as I needed the older son to take on a few extra duties and also the younger ones, catching public transport home from school.   I also needed to change my working hours at the time and this too, was supported by the organisation that I was with.  When I changed workplaces, they also encouraged me to change the degree and they supported me through this process and also provided a paid placement for me – this assisted my whole family during the fourteen weeks.  This organisation also provided me with a study day each fortnight, which enabled me to attend the block classes.  Work colleagues also mentored and supported me during this period.

Even though I have now been working in my field for over a decade– I still need a support system around me, both professionally and personally.  I have those who assist with the business and on the business, marketing, financial advice and even relocating offices.  I also have my supervisor to ensure that I am healthy and to work out any difficulties that I may be experiencing.  Then there is my informal support crew; my family, my friends, my health providers, my external activities that keep me centred and grounded and also my community in which I live.  These all support me in different ways and keep me connected and healthy.

This tribe within the community keep me well in so many ways and are greatly appreciated.

Who supports you in your life?
